Munich Airport to City: S-Bahn, Bus, and Hotel Transfers
Munich Airport is about 32 kilometres north-east of Munich. The S1 and S8 S-Bahn lines are the main public transport link to the city. This page lists the rail, bus and taxi options and how to reach each hotel in this guide.
S-Bahn: S1 and S8
The airport S-Bahn station is directly beneath the central area between the terminals. Two lines serve it: the S1 runs west via Neufahrn and Moosach, the S8 east via Ismaning. Between them a train leaves roughly every 10 minutes for most of the day, and both reach München Hauptbahnhof and Marienplatz in about 40 to 45 minutes. The airport is in MVV zone 5, so a ticket to the city centre covers zones M to 5. Lufthansa Express Bus and regional buses
The Lufthansa Express Bus runs about every 20 minutes between the airport, Schwabing (Nordfriedhof), and the central station, taking around 45 minutes depending on traffic; it is open to all passengers regardless of airline. A one-way adult ticket costs 12.50 euros online or 13.50 euros from the driver, and buses leave the airport between 6:25 am and 10:25 pm. Two MVV regional buses serve hotels near the airport: bus 512 runs from Terminalstraße Mitte through Schwaig and Oberding to Erding, and bus 635 runs from the Munich Airport Center and Terminal 1 past Besucherpark and the Novotel and LabCampus stops to Freising.
Taxis and car
Under the City of Munich taxi tariff (as of 1 July 2026), a Munich taxi from the airport costs a fixed 96 euros to the Hauptbahnhof and 90 euros to the Messe trade fair grounds. Munich Airport gives the drive into the city as about 45 minutes depending on traffic. Ride-hailing operates at the airport with similar journey times.
